ROTC Students Remember POW/MIA With Memorial Run - VFW Post 1581 speaker

Dr. Steven Youngberg - 5/30/2017

Students from Creighton's Army ROTC and UNO's Air Force ROTC came together Friday morning to honor and remember those who never came home from overseas.

Friday is National Prisoner of War and Missing In Action Recognition Day. It's a time for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices thousands of Americans have made.

ROTC students ran a 5K from Creighton's ROTC building to Memorial Park. The 150 students marched in silence and in formation, as a symbol that they will not leave anyone behind.

"We have people who have died out of our detachment given their lives and I’m sure the Army has the same thing," said Jenna DeWilde, the Wing Commander for UNO's AFROTC. "So we really need to remember them through this run."

UNO's detachment commander, Lt. Col. Chris Chocolaad, said the students do the run every year, without being prompted. It's something
Chocolaad said is encouraging.

"I’ve had friends I went to school with that have both been captured and killed," he said. "It’s nice to know the tradition continues and it’s really nice to know that it’s not something you have to really encourage the students to do. They understand it they get it pretty quick."

After the run students heard from the VFW post 1581 Commander about his experiences and how students need to take initiative as members of the military to bring people home.

They also heard from the second female African American Major General in the Army, Marcia Anderson. Marcia is a Creighton alum. She spoke about why she joined the Army and what students can do to keep community top of mind.
